33.3 Rid of Me: A Story - Kate Schatz Published August 2007.

Synopsis:
Kate Schatz' Rid of Me is at once a wholly original work of fiction and an innovative meditation on one writer's relationship to an album. The album in question is PJ Harvey's seminal 1993 recording Rid of Me, a release noted again and again for its raw sound, dark lyrics, and unabashed presentation of female sexuality, desire, and rage. In her prologue, Schatz states that the book is "not about Rid of Me, but because of it" and the book's 14 chapters (one for each song on the album) use the lyrics, moods, images, and characters to create something entirely different, yet intimately connected to the music.

Rid of Me tells the story of Kathleen and Mary, two women who find themselves alone in a house in the middle of the dark, forbidden forest that borders their depressed valley town. Amidst a dramatic natural setting, they negotiate their freedom, their pasts, their survival, and each other. Rid of Me is a story of escape and desire, violence and gender, landscape, family, and memory. It's a twisted fairy tale, a queer dystopia/utopia, and a lyrical exploration of kidnapping, dreams, murder, sex, revenge, and love.

Bio:
Kate Schatz is a writer, editor, and teacher whose fiction and essays have been published in Denver Quarterly, West Branch, Bitch!, LTTR, Kitchen Sink Magazine, and BlitheHouse Quarterly, among others. Kate received her MFA in Literary Arts from Brown University and won the John Hawkes Memorial Prize in Fiction and the Francis Mason Harris Prize. She's a co-founder and editor of The Encyclopedia Project, a 5-volume book series that publishes new writing and visual art (www.encyclopediaproject.org). She lives in Oakland, CA with her boyfriend, their dog Buzz, and their cat Stevie Nicks. Kate likes weather when it's good, celebrities when they're bad, and California, in general.

THANK YOU to everyone who sent in the few setlists this year and thanks for all the lovely emails I have receievd this year.
Have a great christmas and a very happy new year!

More information here: http://www.myspace.com/forpeel
*** UPDATE *** The news item above was originally published by Uncut magazine. Since not being able to get a copy of the CD I checked with the gallery and it seems the CD does NOT have a PJ Harvey track on it at all. I expect there was some confusion as there is a Mick Harvey track on it. Don;t let that put you off going to the exhibition though, I am sure it will be great!

Her stunning appearance, humourous mood (Polly smiled throughout, conversed greatly and had the audience in stiches!) and fantastic performance helped make a very memorable special night. I don't usually 'review' performances on this site but I will make an exception this time as it truly was a stunning show.
Polly also performed three new songs on the piano (the new album has been written on piano) as well as playing many other classic PJ Harvey songs. I hope everyone there enjoyed it as much as Polly did!

Unfortunately still no news on any PJ Harvey releases or concerts in the near future. But all good things come to those who wait (ask countless Kate Bush fans!!).

Apologies to those of you who have joined the mailing list and not received a confirmation email, I have been lazy and I have a backlog of 300 people to add to the mailing list since the end of last summer! Apologies but I will catch up with these shortly.

It also transpires that the music Polly wrote and recorded for Terry Gilliam's new film was not used afterall. Let's hope we see this music released in some form none the less.

Please don't think I have been neglecting the site and please bear with me as we await news... Thanks to all of you who visit regularly!

LATE SUMMER 2005

No news to speak of this summer unfortunately as Polly is now resting after the Uh Huh Her extensive touring and promotion. Rob Ellis is now resident in Italy and playing with the fantastic Marlene Kuntz. John Parish is currently releasing a new album and going out on tour. There are no details about the proposed live DVD from the Uh Huh Her tour so I would assume those plans have been shelved for now...

The Jools Holland Later DVD has been added to the videos page.

BRITS Update:And guess what? Polly lost out on a Brit Award AGAIN!! Suprise, suprise. It's just a HUGE marketing tool anyway and certainly does not reflect what is 'the best' at any strectch of the imagination.

Polly has been nominated for a Brit award! Someone unworthy will win no doubt, as usual. Ceremony will be held on February 9th.

DECEMBER 2004

NME have quoted Polly as saying that Paris was her last concert ever...!!! This was a mis-quote, what Polly actually said, at the show, was 'This is OUR last show' referring to the current line up for the Uh Huh Her tour. It is believed Polly is about to take some time away from public view, let's just hope it's not too long...
Thanks for all the concerned e-mails in the meantime!

16th - Polly & Josh will performing acoustic tracks on Radio 1's tribute to John Peel.
Update: Polly and Josh performed three songs acoustically: 'Horses In My Dreams', 'Fountain' and 'You Come Through'.

13th & 14th - PJ Harvey supporting Morrissey in the UK. Much has been speculated on the internet how Morrissey fans will react to PJ Harvey's appearance, especially considering her pro fox hunting views! Let's hope they respect Morrissey's choice of guest for her music and not her political views!

11th - PJ Harvey Semi-Acoustic show at the Royal Court Theatre, Sloane Sqaure, London. Capacity limited to 400 and tickets are available from : 0207 565 5000 (limited to 2 per caller)
- And what a show! A fantasic 'almost end of tour' performance from Polly and the boys! As Polly said it was a 'fun' way to end the tour and the excitement from herself and the band really came across well. The show was recorded for BBC Radio 3's 'Mixing It' and it will be broadcast in March 2005 - The setlist is on the tour page, as usual. Watch this space...

NOVEMBER 2004

OCTOBER 2004

Rumours abound about PJ Harvey possibly supporting Morrissey in the UK this December. More details as they come in...

It is with great sadness to hear of the death of BBC Radio One DJ John Peel. John was a hugely influential, talented, funny and very much loved personality across the world. John championed the work of PJ Harvey, from the very first single 'Dress' right up to the latest release 'Uh Huh Her'. Polly and collaborators/musicians recorded numerous 'Peel Sessions' for Radio One over the years, giving John and Polly the chance to become good friends in the process. John Peel will be greatly missed.

AUGUST 2004

24th BBC Four filmed an intimate concert for future broadcast. A fantastic venue (LSO ST Lukes - a converted church) held one of the best concerts of the tour with only 100 guests. The setlist was great and everyone had a fantastic time. Good to see some old friends and many friendly faces there...

iTunes USA. Tony James wrote in with the following information: (thanks Tony)
Billed as an "iTunes Original" they've made available recent recordings of 10 songs with her current band and 10 interview snippets. It's an eclectic mix including some rare gems ("Fountain," "Uh Huh Her") and bigger hits ("Dress," "Down by the Water" and "Good Fortune"). Definitely worth the price for any serious fan.

Tracks from the new album have been appearing on file sharing protocol sites. These tracks consist of 30 second clips on a loop. I advise you not to download these tracks as they do not reflect the new PJ Harvey album in its entirety and I am of the opinion that the record company have released these tracks to these sites to stem the flow of potential bootlegging of the new album.

As things will begin to hot up now, please come back to the site for regular updates.
